Food Farm
From Propane to Produce: The Colby & Gale Food Farm Initiative
How our fuel company is growing over 3,500 pounds of MOFGA-certified vegetables for our neighbors in need.

Most people wouldn’t associate a propane and fuel company with MOFGA-certified farms, but here at Colby & Gale, we believe in breaking the mold. Inspired by the passion of one of our very own drivers, Orville Mooney, we officially launched a new Food Farm Initiative in 2024. This project is a centerpiece of our commitment to giving back to the community and strengthening our local impact as a business. By growing organic, fresh, local produce, we are dedicated to finding new ways to support our neighbors and foster genuine community engagement.
What is MOFGA?
MOFGA, or the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, is one of the oldest and largest organic farming organizations in the United States. Founded in 1971, MOFGA promotes sustainable agriculture practices by supporting organic farmers through education, certification, and advocacy.
The organization is best known for its organic certification program, which ensures that farms meet strict organic standards, and for hosting the annual Common Ground Country Fair, celebrating rural living and organic farming. MOFGA’s work is crucial in preserving Maine’s agricultural heritage, encouraging eco-friendly farming practices, and promoting access to healthy, locally grown food.
Addressing Local Food Insecurity
Dubbed the Colby & Gale Food Farm, this initiative focuses on growing produce that local food pantries typically do not, helping to provide a more diverse and complete range of fresh vegetables. In collaboration with these pantries, Colby & Gale ensures a well-rounded selection of vegetables for the community.
Once harvested, fresh produce is personally delivered by Colby & Gale to local food banks, including AIO in Rockland, the Community Fridge in Boothbay, and The Hub/Twin Villages in Damariscotta. We are eagerly hoping to expand that reach in the coming years.

Our local food pantries work tirelessly with our community to ensure that everyone has access to nourishing food. They step in to support those who may be struggling due to job loss, low wages, health challenges, or other difficulties, providing a steady, reliable source of meals for everyone in need. By partnering with our local farms, businesses, and organizations, these pantries strengthen our local food system and keep resources right here in our community. This work not only addresses hunger but also builds a foundation of support, resilience, and connection for us all.

An Unexpected Success
This season alone, Colby & Gale harvested and donated over 3,500 pounds of organic vegetables, valued at around $15,000—significantly exceeding our expectations. What began as a simple, grassroots project has blossomed into a full-scale operation, strengthening Colby & Gale’s commitment to community and receiving an incredible outpouring of local support. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has contributed to this journey, and we eagerly anticipate the future growth and opportunities this initiative will bring.
This is the Colby & Gale difference: woven into our company ethos and values, because we are better together.
