A Quick Guide to Your Heating Oil Gauge

Use this simple guide to understand your oil tank gauge, spot problems, and know exactly when to order a refill.

1. How to Read Your Gauge

Look for the disc inside the clear vial on top of your tank. The tick marks show your approximate fuel level:

  • F – Full
  • 3/4 – Three-Quarters Full
  • 1/2 – Half Full
  • 1/4 – One-Quarter Full

Important: These gauges are estimates, not precision tools, especially when the tank is low.

2. Is Your Gauge Stuck? (A Quick Test)

If the reading seems frozen, your float gauge might be stuck.

  • Unscrew the outer plastic vial by hand.
  • Gently press the indicator disc down with your finger.
  • Observe: A working gauge will move down easily and float back up. If it doesn’t move or stays down, it’s stuck.

3. When to Order More Oil

The golden rule is to order a delivery when your gauge reads 1/4 full. This provides a safe buffer and ensures you won’t run out before your new oil arrives.
